Understanding the CDP framework

CDP is a nonprofit organization that runs one of the largest environmental disclosure system. The organization provides standardized questionnaires for companies to disclose consistent, comparable environmental data. CDP scores these disclosures annually, evaluating companies based on both transparency and performance.

The long-term goal for many is to make it onto the coveted "A-List", a distinction earned by only a small fraction of the thousands of companies CDP scores each year.

How the CDP questionnaire works

CDP's integrated questionnaire covers modules including climate, water, and forests, with plastics and biodiversity questions also included. Companies disclose against these modules annually, and CDP evaluates responses using a scoring methodology built around essential criteria — core disclosure elements that are particularly important for governance and risk modules and for advancing beyond entry-level scores.

Each disclosure cycle follows a similar rhythm:

  • A questionnaire and scoring methodology are published ahead of the reporting window
  • A reporting window opens during which companies submit their disclosures
  • A scoring deadline determines eligibility for a CDP score that year
  • A later deadline allows for unscored responses and amendments

Strategic alignment & scope

  • CDP's framework is increasingly aligned with ESRS (EU Sustainability Reporting Standards) and IFRS S2, enabling cross-framework reporting efficiencies
  • Comprehensive Scope 3 reporting and supplier engagement are consistently emphasized, with third-party verification recognized as a strong signal of data quality
  • Elements of nature-related financial disclosure (in line with TNFD) are increasingly embedded through the biodiversity and plastics questions, alongside CDP's ongoing focus on climate transition plans and transparency as a competitive differentiator

The Three Phases of CDP Reporting:

Phase 1: Getting Started

  • Review the latest CDP questionnaire and scoring methodology for the relevant modules

  • Conduct a gap analysis using your previous report and scoring

  • Set internal timelines aligned with the scoring window

  • Prepare to disclose essential criteria, even if not targeting top scores

Phase 2: Data Collection & Reporting

  • Use Cozero to gather data on scope 1-3 emissions and energy consumption, engage suppliers, and capture verifiable metrics

  • Define reporting boundaries carefully for consistency with Module 1 guidance

Phase 3: Continuous Improvement

  • Leverage Cozero’s Computed Reports for CDP and CSRD compliance

  • Use your latest score as a benchmark for advancing toward robust verification, Scope 3 transparency, and eventually, industry leadership-level scoring

  • Plan ahead: transition plan disclosures, supplier engagement enhancement, and biodiversity strategy are strategic upgrades for 2026 and beyond - by mobilizing investment in these areas now, you can gain a competitive advantage in future markets

Generating CDP Reports in Cozero

In Cozero, you can track and report your GHG emissions according to specific data ranges and business units or certain guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Currently, CSRD E1-4; E1-5 and E1-6 as well as the CDP Report are integrated into Cozero in “Computed Reports”. The feature simplifies the disclosure process and empowers our customers to align with international sustainability standards effortlessly.

How to use Computed Reports:

  • Report Name: Set a title for your report

  • Base Year: Set a reference year for the selected Business Unit to compare data and track progress over time.

  • Reporting Year: The year for which the organization is compiling and disclosing emissions data, which is compared to the base year to evaluate progress in emissions reduction.

  • Business Unit: The organizational unit for which you want to report and track emissions.

  • Click Generate Report → Status: The progress information next to the report name provides details on the current status. While the report is being computed, the field shows “Processing” and switches to “Available”, once the report has been generated.

  • Download Report as Excel to share with stakeholders and streamline submission
